Leading-Edge Instructional Resources

Search and stream tens of thousands of SOL correlated video clips “on-demand”, view broadcast instructional television schedules and related materials, find high-quality lesson plans, explore online curriculum, link to educational resources from area cultural institutions, and learn about K-12 Internet services.

Video on Demand (VOD)

Working in partnership with Discovery Education, WHRO brings the unitedstreaming video-on-demand service to educators across the state of Virginia.  The system features over 4,000 video titles that have been “segmented” into nearly 40,000 shorter content clips that can be searched by curriculum standard, keyword, subject area, grade, producer, new releases, or all available titles.  Each clip has been correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and can be streamed live or downloaded and viewed later.  Additional features include an image library with over 18,000 images; associated lesson plans, teacher's guides and blackline masters/worksheets; a calendar of important dates in history linked to video clips in five core curriculum areas, plus biographies, health and guidance, and commemorations; 27,000 encyclopedia articles; over 1,200 editable video clips; a Clip Art Gallery with over 1,500 images; and a Weekly Teacher Feature tool with video clips, lesson plans, and student activities.

WHRO Classroom

Each year, through state funding, WHRO broadcasts over 500 hours of FREE SOL correlated instructional programs and offers associated on-site utilization workshops.  Over 200 instructional series, including associated teacher’s guides, covering core curriculum at all grade levels is available.  Previews (TBD), weekly broadcast schedules, extended program descriptions and an SOL searchable database make finding the right program for the right subject quick and easy.

The Virtual Virginia Advanced Placement School

The Virginia Virtual Advanced Placement School
is a program of the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) that is operated by WHRO under contract with the VADOE.  VVAPS offers dozens of online AP and foreign language courses to students across the commonwealth and nation.  Each course contains video segments, audio clips, whiteboard and online discussions as well as text.  E-Teachers are available for telephone conversations with students throughout the school day.  VVAPS classes offer a rich multimedia learning environment that appeals to a variety of learning styles and courses can be scheduled flexibly throughout the day, as they do not have to be taken in 'real' time.

Regional Virtual School

2007 marked the beginning of a new era in online student instruction in Hampton Roads. That’s the date that four brand new, regionally-developed, online student instruction courses debuted including English 9, Earth Science, Survival Economics, and U.S. Government. In development since early 2006, these courses were the first of what will be a steady stream of online courses created through a cooperative venture known as the Hampton Roads Virtual Learning Center.  HRVLC is funded by a number of the schools that own the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association, Inc. (HRETA), WHRO’s parent company.

While online student instruction courses have been available in Hampton Roads for a number of years, this is the first time that the school divisions in the region have pulled together to mutually determine needs and to cooperatively develop course content “from the ground up.” All of the courses are aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning; have been created and reviewed by content experts from across the region to assure the highest quality; and are modular in nature to allow for maximum delivery flexibility.

Upon completion, the courses will be made available to each participating school division to further customize and use as they see fit within their divisions. In the not too distant future it is even possible that regional courses will be offered so that students in any school division can take, regardless of location.

For more information on this exciting, forward-thinking initiative please contact Jacque Dewey, E-Learning Manager at WHRO and Project Manager for course development at jacque.dewey@whro.org or 757.889.9400.

The Cultural Portal

With funding assistance from a regional NCLB EdTech grant, WHRO and the C.I.I. bring you the Cultural Portal featuring information on, and links to, hundreds of educational resources from dozens of museums, historic sites, and other cultural institutions across Hampton Roads. The resources have been categorized by Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and are accessible via an easy-to-use web site.

Lesson Plans

Pulled from a variety of sources, WHRO connects you with hundreds of high-quality lesson plans that can be used “as is” or modified to meet your individual needs.  PBS TeacherSource features 4,500 lessons and activities that are searchable by keyword, subject, and/or grade and can be automatically correlated to Virginia and national standards.  You can even personalize TeacherSource to match your grade level, subject area, and location which lets you see content features tied to your specific interests, access accurate local TV schedule information, and subscribe to a tailored version of an e-mail newsletter, Teacher Previews.  Region 2 NCLB EdTech Lessons (TBD) is a searchable database featuring hundreds of lessons created by Virginia educators as part of the Region 2 NCLB EdTech grant.  All lessons have been vetted by local evaluators.  The Commonwealth of Knowledge site features a searchable database of more than 300 lesson plans submitted electronically by state teachers who earn recertification points for approved plans.  Other educators may download the plans to assist them in teaching specific components of Virginia's Standards of Learning for particular school subjects.

Online Curriculum

Over the years, WHRO has worked with a number of partners to develop an array of online curriculum resources including Bay Link an educational site centered on the Chesapeake Bay estuary, the people living on its drainage area, and the effect the various natural and human forces have on the bay featuring lesson plans and a media center containing dozens of still images, audio files and video clips; Look in the Mythic Mirror a 10-week curriculum unit for grades 6-8, integrating concepts, materials and content from language arts, music and visual arts; Economics Online a complete 10-week multimedia, interdisciplinary curriculum unit that satisfies Virginia Social Science Standards of Learning 7.6, 7.7 and 7.10 and portions of the Computer/Technology Standards of Learning 8.1 and 8.2; Virginia Pathways an educational video series with print and web materials that is dictated by the fourth grade Virginia History Standards of Learning; Magic an innovative, standards-based, art and technology program that includes lesson plans with extensions into other subject areas such as English, Social Science, and Science where students create various art "exhibits"-that become part of an ongoing Internet Art Exhibit-after listening to original, contemporary music compositions; and NovaNET an on-line service specifically for alternative education, including: dropout recovery, pregnant teens, court-assisted programs, and some vocational education and adult education programs.
